FLOWERS IN MY GARDEN

Stapelia gigantea (Carrion Flower)

"Stapelias are strange succulent plants native to the deserts of South Africa. The extremely large, starfish-shaped flowers of Stapelia gigantea are pale yellow with reddish tripes. The flowers give off a pestilent smell that attracts flies. As they buzz from flower to flower, flies collect pollen and transport it to the next plant, thereby ensuring the successful pollination of this species. The flower’s putrid smell and hairy, leathery texture mimic the rotting flesh of a dead animal."

A WALK AROUND ENSEADA AZUL

The vegetal formation of the Ecological Reserve at Enseada Azul is "cerrado". "Cerrado" is the regional name given to the Brazilian ecosystem which is similar to savannas. "Cerrado" is formed by vegetal formations of variable aspects and physiognomy, mainly of small and twisted trees that become covered to an exuberant creeping plants.

BUTTERFLY

Photos by Sonia A. Mascaro

................

Despite its lively color, this butterfly you see is dead. I found its lifeless body at the floor of my porch and I decided to photograph this beautiful insect front and back.
